Frequently Asked Questions

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

INGREDIENTS

WHY AREN’T ALL OF OUR FOODS AND DRINKS ORGANIC?

Organic certified ingredients means we have very little choice in the range and quality of foods we buy. They’re also expensive.

For example, we can buy the highest quality traditional variety apples that are farmed sustainably by a responsible farmer we know well, dried with no preservatives or sweeteners, and that taste better than other organic dried apples, and are cheaper.

Another reason for this is that, when grown sustainably in their natural habitat, it’s entirely possible for there to be no discernible difference between the organic certified & conventional ingredients, other than the cost. This applies to our porridge oats, which are exclusively Scottish, and from the same mill as our organic oats. In this case it makes more sense to us to select conventional oats that are sustainable and do not compromise our ethics or the taste of the food.

For a food to be certified Organic it must contain more than 95% organic ingredients. Some of our conventional foods still contain organic ingredients, but only those that need to be organic to meet our demands for sustainability, ethics and taste, however in this case the food can’t be called organic.

We have only used non-organic ingredients when we are satisfied that our demand for ethics, sustainability and taste are met. We do not take the decision to produce either organic or non-organic foods lightly.

WHERE DO WE SOURCE OUR INGREDIENTS?

The majority of our ingredients are from Europe or from countries around the Mediterranean, from areas where they grow best, where they have been grown sustainably and historically, and always from the same producers who we have known for years. For example, our Mueslis are made with a mix of Scottish and English oats, and our almonds in the Almond Drink are the finest in Sicily.

CAN I EAT/DRINK IT AFTER THE BEST BEFORE DATE?

Best Before is a quality guideline, not a safety guideline.  So food may not be at its best after the BB date (hence the name) but it isn’t a safety issue.

There are “social supermarkets” that sell food that’s out of date i.e. beyond its BB date.  It’s completely legal.

WHAT IS THE GLYCEMIC INDEX?

We cannot provide you with the Glycemic Index rating of our foods. We looked into getting the Glycemic Index of some of our foods, however there was great variety with the results and we can’t guarantee the validity. But, using whole grains ensures energy is released slowly. We also reduce sugar to a minimum.

STONE? HUSK?

We use wholesome/wholegrain ingredients. This means that, although we have thorough and extensive quality control measures throughout the manufacturing process, there can be the odd husk etc that slips through the cracks.

DRINKS

WHY DOES ALMOND DRINK ONLY CONTAIN 1% ALMONDS?

We found that this was the perfect amount for a delicious and smooth almond taste. If we added more almonds it began to taste like marzipan, whereas any less simply tasted of rice.

Each of our drinks contain 5 ingredients or less and is made with 100% organic ingredients, we do not add any thickeners, stabilisers, carrageenans, gums, emulsifiers or sweeteners. This is what gives the Almond Drink its refreshingly smooth and clean taste.

WHY DO YOU HAVE RICE IN YOUR DRINKS?

The rice acts as a natural thickener in our drinks. We use rice rather than adding artificial thickeners, gums or other additives so that our drinks are as pure, simple and natural as possible.

The sweetness from the drinks comes from cooking the rice slowly for a long time in Italian mountain spring water. This turns some starches into sugar. At about 5%, the sugar level is about the same as the sugar level in milk (which is about 5% for skimmed, semi-skimmed and whole).

DO OUR DRINKS WITH RICE IN CONTAIN ARSENIC?

All of our drinks batches are tested for arsenic and we have never come across an issue. This is because we use the finest Italian rice, whereas it is rice from the East that can have significant traces due to arsenic in the soil.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF OUR DRINKS?

We don’t make claims about our drinks’ health benefits. We say that it is a dairy alternative – not better than it. We make drinks, not milk. We aren’t trying to turn dairy drinkers to non-dairy drinkers. We are an all-inclusive brand and have something for those who don’t want dairy, but also have brilliant accompaniments to dairy products.

DO WE FORTIFY OUR DRINKS?

Since fortification was introduced to cover up nutritional deficiency in food, to make up for what was naturally missing, we have no need to fortify our foods and drinks. We stand by all our foods as naturally nutritious – they don’t need fortification to be what they are. We believe food should be made out of food. If we felt the need to fortify, we would not feel like we could stand by it as food. In our cereals for example we always use the whole grain, never an extruded lesser version – rather than adding ingredients to make up for a lack of nutrition, we prefer to start with the whole ingredient. Our drinks are a refreshing alternative to milk, but if consumers are seeking the nutritional benefits of dairy milk – we recommend they supplement it naturally with real food containing the desired vitamins and minerals. Calcium for example can be found in various nuts and seeds, and also spinach.

We believe that fortification detracts from real food, real ingredients and real absorbable nutrition.

HOW DO WE REDUCE PHYTIC ACID?

We soak our oats/rice in the drinks which neutralises the effects of phytic acid.

Rude Health recommends and encourages soaking. We soak the oats in our porridges and muesli. This is mentioned in our serving suggestions/cooking guidance.

WHY DO OUR DRINKS SOMETIMES SPLIT?

We do not add any artificial emulsifiers, additives, or preservatives to our drinks and therefore the ingredients do sometimes separate a little – this is perfectly normal and the drink is not ‘curdling.’

We suggest that you lightly shake the carton before opening.

HOW DO WE PREVENT OUR DRINK FROM SPLITTING?

Our drinks sometimes split in tea and coffee due to the extreme temperature difference and the acidity. Waiting for it to cool slightly before adding the drink helps.

ARE OUR DRINKS SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN?

Our drinks are not nutritional replacements to milk and aren’t suitable as a substitute for breast milk or weaning milk. After weaning months you can incorporate our drinks into a dairy-free diet following nutrition advice given by your doctor.

GRANOLA

WHY ISN’T THE GRANOLA CLUSTER-FUL?

After customer feedback we have gone above and beyond to reduce the sugar content to our granolas but still maintaining the best quality ingredients and the balance of taste and health.

WHERE IS THE HONEY IN OUR GRANOLA FROM?

This honey is mainly from in Mexico – on the region of Yucatan from many little beekeepers who do this as a second job for additional income. The bees fly almost all year round. Only in the rainy season from June to October/November they find less nectar as the rain is washing it away. Nevertheless it is not that dramatic and the beekeepers are not feeding them with sugared water in this time, nor do they take all the bees’ honey.

PORRIDGES

WHY ARE OUR PORRIDGES NOT GLUTEN-FREE?

Our oats aren’t gluten free as there may have been cross contamination. The oats cannot be grown in a field that has been used to grow gluten-containing grains for years and it has to be miles away from such a field too. This is hard to achieve in England.

Oats as a grain do not contain gluten, however it does contain a protein very similar in molecular structure to gluten, called avenin. Avenin may cause some trouble for people who cannot tolerate gluten, while others may find that it is not a problem. Gluten free oats still contain the avenin.

If you cannot eat gluten and are unsure if you can eat oats, we recommend that you follow your doctors advice and the advice on the coeliac website which recommends introducing oats to your diet in small quantities to see how your body reacts.

Gluten-free breakfast option: Sprouted Oats, Coconut and Seed Muesli, Honey Puffed Oats and Puffed Brown Rice.

We looked into getting the Glycemic Index of some of our foods, however there was great variety with the results and we did not want to publish these, as we can’t guarantee the validity. We can however assure that all of our foods are produced using whole grains, which release energy slowly. We only use natural unrefined sugars in our foods containing sugar, and keep the quantity to a minimum.

RECYCLING/PACKAGING

IS OUR PACKAGING RECYCLABLE?

The cardboard’s sourced sustainably and is 100% recyclable – please do your bit.

WHY IS OUR PLASTIC PACKAGING SO THIN?

The plastic can be thin as we want to use as little of it as possible as part of our environmentally conscious focus. We suggest pulling out the plastic and cutting it with sharp scissors. It stops it ripping. If all else fails, go for the trusty Tupperware.

CAN I RECYCLE THE DRINKS CARTONS?

The Tetrapack cartons can be recycled, but it depends on your area. Have a look here: http://www.tetrapakrecycling.co.uk/locator.aspv

ARE WE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY?

Our food and drinks are made with sustainably-grown ingredients, and we try our utmost to ensure that our packaging is either made from recyclable material or is recyclable.

We cycle to work, compost our teabags and even give out biodegradable and reusable cutlery and cups made by Vegware at tasting sessions. But we’re always trying to improve.

WHY DO WE HAVE A HOLE IN THE BOX?

We chose to have the window in the box to allow consumers to see the product before buying. We are proud of our foods and are transparent in everything we do from sourcing to selling.

We suggest lifting the bag above the box before pouring and then easing back into the box when you’re finished.
