What are the rules? The aim is to roll a wheel of cheese down a steep hill and try to beat it to the bottom and ultimately catch the cheese if you can. Although this is almost impossible as the Gloucester Cheese weighs 9lbs and can reach up to 70mph. The event attracts hundreds of people each year and has become a treasured tradition you don’t want to miss. If you want to take part in this extreme sport all you have to do is turn up and make your way up the hill.Thrill-seeking runners must be at the top of Cooper’s Hill at noon. The prize? A wheel of cheese, of course.
Worm Charming Championships – Willaston:
Worm charming usually performed to collect bait for fishing but can also take the form of a competitive sport in areas such as east Texax or.. in the UK, Wilaston.
This light-hearted event is in Willaston and has been taking place since 1979… Last year marked the 40th Anniversary of the event. The idea is to try to coax as many worms out of the ground as you can using different wacky methods, worm charming, worm grunting, and worm fiddling to name a few. One method is to use a a rod called a ‘stob’ that is pushed into the ground and bashed with another rod known as a ‘roping iron’. Each contestant gets 3×3 area of land to charm their worms in, with one couple managing an amazing 567 worm count in 2009.
Greasy Pole – Norfolk:
This hevent takes place at Blakeney Quay where people have to walk or run across a 30 ft wooden pole which is suspended above seawater and reach the end whilst still standing. The pole is heavily greased which makes it near impossible to not fall off, with only 1 in 5 managing to reach the end. Hundreds gather every year to watch the daredevils and as long as you are 12 years or older you can also participate in the event.
The event dates back to 1873 and in the early days, the prize for winning was a hog! Blakeney regatta also includes sailing, swimming, and tug of war across the creek.
