October 2nd marked the 6th annual Rude Health Porridge Championships. This year we passed the spurtle to the media world, inviting cookery writers and food journalists to put their porridge prowess to the test to be crowned the Rude Health porridge champion 2018.
Writers from Grazia, Women’s health, Sainsbury’s Magazine, Foodism, About Time, Healthy Living London, TI Media and Not Plant Based had a mere 20 minutes to make their bowl of porridge perfection. To separate the wheat from the chaff, their recipe was then judged by Imogen Davies, two-time Rude Health porridge champion and co-founder of Native, Nigel Barden, BBC Radio 2 presenter and Great Taste Award Judge, and our very own Co-founder Nick Barnard who also happens to be an award winning porridge maker (2013 winner of the speciality category at the 2013 World Porridge Championships).
After deliberating on presentation, taste, texture and innovation, they unanimously chose Women’s Health to take home the winning title for their mind-blowing umami bacon, chive and dulse oats, topped with a soft-boiled egg. Grabbing second and third place were Sainsbury’s Magazine with their coconut chai porridge with caramelised mango and banana and Foodism with their beer soaked oats with maple pancetta.
