From tree to taste: Our coconut story
When people think of coconuts, it’s all palm trees and beachy daydreams. But the real story? It’s farmers, families, and generations of expertise.
Firstly, not all coconuts are created equal (and your tastebuds know it)
Let’s be honest. You’ve had a coconut drink that made you pause… and not in a good way.
Too watery. Too thick. Slightly… suncream-adjacent?
Here’s the thing: not all coconut drinks are created equal. And once you notice the difference, there’s no going back.
Coconut illusions
Some coconut drinks are stripped back, processed to remove the natural fats that give coconut its signature richness. What’s left can feel thin, flat, even a little chalky.
So what happens next? In come the extras: gums for texture, flavourings for taste. Suddenly things get strange. You end up with something that’s either suspiciously thick or fake in flavour, and sometimes tastes more like a beach holiday gone wrong. Not exactly what you want swirling through your morning coffee.
The whole coconut
At Rude Health, we keep things simple. We use the whole coconut which means:
· The natural fats stay in → hello, silky creaminess
· No gums → nothing gloopy or artificial
· No flavourings or artificial sweetness → the taste of coconut, as it should be
Across our Organic, Barista and Chilled Coconut drinks, the idea is the same: let the coconut do its thing.
Only natural ingredients. No shortcuts. No artificial additives. No added sugar.
So, what do our coconut drinks taste like?
In a word: real.
In a few more: Refreshing, creamy, luxurious coconut with a gentle sweetness from oats or rice. We add a pinch of sea salt to round everything out, enhancing the flavour and giving the drink a fuller, more satisfying finish. The creaminess coats your palate, lifts your coffee or tea, and makes every taste of it a bit more indulgent.
Organic: Not just a label
For our Organic Coconut drink, great taste is only part of the story. How it’s grown matters too.
That means no synthetic fertilisers and no chemical herbicides or pesticides.
Organic farming supports up to 30% more biodiversity, and helps keep the surrounding ecosystem and soil thriving.
The story behind our coconuts
When people think of coconuts, they often picture tropical beaches and palm trees swaying in the breeze. But behind every coconut product is something far more meaningful: families, communities, and generations of farming knowledge.
Our coconuts are sourced from smallholder farmers in Sri Lanka and the Philippines, two of the world’s most respected coconut-growing regions. Here’s what makes that special.
· Grown by families, not factories: In both countries, coconut farming is typically a family livelihood. Most farms are small, often just a few acres, and passed down through generations. Many farmers are third- or fourth-generation growers, caring for trees planted decades ago.
· A year-round harvest: Unlike many crops, coconuts don’t wait for a single season. Coconut palms produce fruit continuously, so farmers harvest every 30 to 60 days. That means constant care monitoring the trees, managing soil and moisture, and harvesting at just the right moment. It also provides steady income, helping support families and communities throughout the year.
· Skill, tradition & craft: Harvesting coconuts is skilled work. In many regions, trained climbers carefully scale tall palms using traditional methods or specialised equipment. Their expertise ensures nuts are harvested at just the right maturity.
· More than one crop: Coconut farms are often diverse ecosystems. You’ll find cacao, bananas, or vegetables between the palms. This improves soil health, supports biodiversity, and provides additional income streams, creating resilience for farming households.
And just to be clear: no monkeys are used to harvest our coconuts.
